Vancouver Canucks vs San Jose Sharks

The Vancouver Canucks are trying to prove that they are more then just pretenders while the San Jose Sharks are making their second straight appearance in the conference finals. The Canucks took care of the Nashville Predators, who made their first trip to the conference semi-finals in their team's history. Nashville was no easy out as the goalies for both teams were outstanding. Vancouver had a slip up in round one but looked much more determined against the Predators. Ryan Kesler came alive and really jump started the team when they needed it the most while the Sedin Twins are looking like playoff novices. The Sedins tore up the regular season once again but since the playoffs have begun they have been M.I.A. That will need to change or yet another President's Trophy winning team will see their season end early. Vancouver was the pick of many during the regular season to make it to the finals and now only one team stands in their way.

The San Jose Sharks needed to eliminate the Detroit Redwings for the second straight season to move on to the conference finals and they proved that was no easy task. The Sharks looked to finish off the Redwings quickly after taking a 3-0 lead in the series but the Wings pushed them to the brink in game 7. San Jose has basically the same team as they did last season but with one key difference, Antti Niemi. Niemi was a key component to the Blackhawks sweeping the Sharks in the conference finals last year and ultimately beating the Flyers for the Stanley Cup. Thanks to an arbitrator in the off season the Hawks were forced to part ways with the cup winning goalie who then signed in San Jose. The Sharks will defintely look to make this trip to the conference finals a better one that last year. The emergence of Logan Coture has been key for the Sharks on their journey as the rookie has been outstanding. Coture did play in the playoffs last season but with an entire season under his belt is making impressive strides to help his team advance. The Sharks will need all of their big guns if they want to beat Vancouver and eventually win it all and that means players like Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau will need to step up.

X Factor

Roberto Luongo needs to prove that he is more than just regular season goalie with a big performance in the conference finals as he is in unfamiliar territory. If he doesn't they still have Corey Schneider to back him up but the conference finals are a difficult place to just jump in and play well for a young goalie. 

Vancouver is the favorite in this series but in the NHL playoffs that means very little while at times the Sharks looked mighty impressive against the Redwings. They also looked like they didn't belong in the playoffs at times which is why the series went 7. The Sharks have to realize where they are and can not take their foot off the pedal.

Eastern Conference Finals

Tampa Bay Lightning vs Boston Bruins

This can be considered by many to be a surprise east finals match up but given their performances last round it will be hard to not give them credit after both finished in sweeps. The Tampa Bay Lightning took down a Capitals team that had looked different from years past and appeared to be its most ready to make a long run. Dwayne Roloson continued his dominance of Washington this season after shutting them out twice during the regular season. The big names have been accounted for so far in the playoffs with Martin St. Louis and Vinny Lecavalier playing the veteran roles this time as they try and win Lord Stanley's Cup. Tampa Bay lost Simon Gagne in game 1 last series to a concussion but he has been skating with the team again and is expected to start the next series. Gagne was hit by Washington defenseman Scott Hannan and had his head bounce off the ice. Gagne will be a nice addition if he is able to continue where he left off. A surprise player always usually makes a name for themselves in the post season and this year it is Sean Bergenheim. Bergenheim has scored a number of big goals for the Lightning thus far and leads the team with 7. He will look to continue that positive play against the Bruins. There are a few players on this Tampa Bay team that have won it all before and will use that experience to catch an edge up on Boston.

The Boston Bruins couldn't have been happier with the way their series finished against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Bruins defeated one of the league's deepest teams in 4 games and rally took advantage of by far the worst playoff goal tending in NHL history.  The Bruins are a team that uses spaced out scoring, solid defense and outstanding goal tending to win and it is proving to be quite effective. David Krejci had an excellent series against the Flyers and really showed up for the first time this post season along with Milan Lucic. The play of Thomas is always important and he is back to his Vezina winning ways. Thomas is once again in the running for the Vezina after being replaced by Tukka Rask last season. The Bruins will be without Patrice Bergeron and that will hurt because he is the team's highest point producer through the first two rounds. Bergeron took a hit from Flyers forward Claude Giroux and is out with a concussion. If he is unable to return it could be a tough going for Boston. Zdeno Chara will also have to do his best at containing the likes of Martin St. Louis and company if the Bruins wish to advance

X Factor

The Bruins did well against Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky but they know run into 41-year old Dwayne Roloson. Roloson was a late addition for the Lightning in net and is proving to be the most importance piece in the puzzle. in 2006 Roloson was traded to the Edmonton Oilers and helped take the 8 seed to the Stanley Cup Finals where they lost to Carolina in 7 games. Roloson was hurt in game 1 however and did not return. He will look to get another crack at the cup in this series against Boston.

The Boston Bruins will be hurting with out Patrice Bergeron and if they had him maybe it will be enough. The rest of the Bruins are still confident in their abilities however, especially new comer Nathan Horton who is in the post season for the first time ever and making it count. The Lightning are flying high after beating the Penguins and Capitals and are proving to be difficult to deal with. Look for the Lighting to get the best of this one in an incredible goal tending battle.

2nd Round Eastern Conference

                     The Washington Capitals vs The Tampa Bay Lightning

The Washington Capitals made quick work of the New York Rangers in only 5 games, while playing an impressive defensive game. The Capitals have attempted to change their game to be more ready to make a deep run in the playoffs by adding veterans Jason Arnott and Dennis Wideman while also benefiting from the emergence of Marcus Johansson. Much has been said about Alex Ovechkin only scoring 30 goals this season yet the Capitals still finished with the east's best record. Mike Green is also expected back after again running into concussion problems. Alexander Semin will have to continue his recent scoring touch as he has played well with Arnott.

They now meet division rival Tampa Bay fresh off their comeback defeat of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 7 games. The Lightning play a laid back style in the neutral zone which can easily affect the zone entry of the Capitals. The big story of this series will be the play of 41 year old Dwayne Roloson between the pipes for the Lightning. Roloson was key in defeating the Penguins even shutting them out at home in game 7. The Capitals remember vividly the late season acquisition of Roloson as he shut the Capitals out at home while still dawning Islanders pads, twice. The Lightning also have Hart candidate Martin St. Louis who will look to have a big role. Don't forget about Steven Stamkos even though it is easy to the way he finished the season and for how he has been thus far. Simon Gagne has also been a bright spot with his 7 points last round which ties him with former teammate Danny Briere of the Philadelphia Flyers for the overall lead. 

The X factor for this series will be Steven Stamkos and whether he is able to get going like he was early in the season when critics threw out the question of 50 in 50. ( 50 goals in 50 games) So far he has looked exactly like a young player playing in his first playoff series, scared. If he turns it on it could me a trip to the east finals for Tampa Bay.

The goalie battle is between 23 year-old Michal Neuvirth and 41 year-old Dwayne Roloson. If Neuvirth looks shaky Washington has only more youth behind him with Braden Holtby and Semyon Varlamov. Roloson is experienced and is looking as confident as ever and may be able to steal a few games completely on his own. The Capitals late additions could be monumental in their ability to move on in this series with Jason Arnott being added to the lineup bringing a Stanley Cup ring with him. 

Capitals in 6

                                  The Philadelphia Flyers vs The Boston Bruins

The Philadelphia Flyers were taken to 7 games by the Buffalo Sabers mainly due to incredibly inconsistent goal tending. Ryan Miller was his usual self as he shut the Flyers out twice. In goal for the Flyers was first rookie Sergei Bobrovsky but he was unable to last past game 2. Brian Boucher was then the next to start with Leighton now backing him up and Bobrovsky sitting in the stands. When Boucher allowed three weak goals in the first period of game 5, Leighton came in relief and impressed. He would then get the nod the next night but he too only lasted the first. Boucher then regained his starting position and will now look to be the guy for Philadelphia. Daniel Briere and Claude Giroux are running the Flyers offense just how they did in the Flyers run to the finals last season. Briere has 6 goals and 7 points thus far. Chris Pronger will look to have a bigger impact in this series after only playing 2 games against the Sabers.

The Boston Bruins are trying to forget their collapse from last season where they became the 3rd NHL team to lose a best of 7 series after having a 3-0 lead. The Bruins can't help but hear it everywhere now as they once again meet the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round. This Bruins team is much different from that one however with 7 new names on the roster. Nathan Horton and Chris Kelly have been the most important additions for them in the post season so far. Goalie Tim Thomas will also be in net this time as he once again is in the running for the Vezina trophy. The Bruins were also taken to 7 games in the first round with Montreal just falling short in overtime. The Montreal Canadians however, do not have the scoring depth that Philadelphia has and the Bruins defense will have their hands full. Mark Recchi continues to impress at the age of 43 and has no signs of slowing down. Zdeno Chara and Tomas Kaberle will have to slow down the Flyers offense or Tim Thomas will be in trouble. 

The X factor of this series is Milan Lucic as he is yet to score a goal in these playoffs. Lucic will have to do what he does best and be physical and show why he was able to be a 30 goal scorer in the regular season. If Lucic can be that presence for the Bruins it could help them immensely in their chances to advance.

The Flyers goalie woes were an issue but the better goalie performances in other series didn't always win. Both Roberto Luongo and Antti Niemi were pulled twice in the first round but their teams still advanced. Brian Boucher will likely have to take control of the staring position if the Flyers expect to advance.

2nd Round Western Conference

                              The Vancouver Canucks vs The Nashville Predators

Before the Vancouver Chicago series started, Chicago had previously had Vancouver's number for the past two seasons. The Blackhawks twice handled the Canucks and even went on to win the Stanley Cup last season. A new-look Hawks team came into the post-season as an 8-seed while the Canucks walked away with the Presidents Trophy this year with seemingly no issues. They started the series that way as well going up 3-0. Chicago then benefited mightily from the return of Dave Bolland in game 4. Bolland was able to shut down the Sedins for the remainder of the series while still putting points on the board. This allowed Chicago to come back in the series and almost become the 4th NHL team to come back from being down 3-0 in a best of 7 series and the second team in the last two years. However two goals from Alex Burrows in game 7, including the OT winner, was enough. The real story in this series was Roberto Luongo. Luongo had another stellar regular season and was looking to put his playoff failures behind him. Things started well but he was then pulled in games 4 and 5 and didn't get the start in game 6. Cory Schneider got the nod after coming in well in relief the previous two games. However during a penalty shot attempt by Michal Frolik, Schneider went down with a severe leg cramp and back in went Luongo. He then played well enough to get the series clinching victory in OT in game 7. Vancouver will need Luongo to be consistent if they are looking to be more than just the best team from the regular season.

The Nashville Predators were able to move on to the second round for the first time in their franchise history by defeating the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks were looking dangerous as they came into the playoffs with Corey Perry on fire and a determined 41year-old Teemu Selanne. Selanne was able to score 6 goals in the 6 games the Ducks played in the series but perhaps staring Dan Ellis in goal was not the way to begin the series. He was pulled in favor of Ray Emery who held down the fort the rest of the way. The Preds used great defense and goaltending along with great play from Mike Fisher and were able to take out the Ducks in 6 games. The goaltending of Pekka Rinne was superb and will have to be more so if the Preds are going to take out the Canucks. Not a lot of people have had faith in the Preds in years past but I feel they could have easily past the first round in years past but let those failures help them this year. A team that had two 50 point players in Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyn did enough defensively to take out the likes of Corey Perry, Teemu Selanne, Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf. This Predator team has great coaching in Barry Trotz and leadership in Captain Shea Webber.

This match-up may seem obvious to some as the high-powered Canucks look to continue on for their quest for the Cup. This series will be low scoring and probably quite physical. The Predators are not afraid of the Presidents Trophy winners and will use their team depth to possibly catch the Canucks off guard. Vancouver is coming off a tough 7 game series last round as they only finished off the Hawks a few nights ago. The Predators have had some time to rest and take a look at their opponents and will look to jump on Roberto Luongo who looking to regain his confidence.

X Factor
The X factor for this series is going to be Mike Fisher. The role of Fisher will be similar to that of Dave Bolland in the previous series. He is the top centerman for the Preds and will enjoy the roll of attempting to shut-down the Sedin twins. He will also need to put some point on the board if Nashville will skate away into the Western Conference Finals.

I personally felt the Cancuks would do enough to get by Blackhawks this year and they made that much more difficult than it had to be. I still feel that Roberto Luongo is not going to be able to take his team through a two month playoff run. Mike Fisher will prove to be a huge deadline trade for Nashville as he will shut down the Sedin twins.

Predators in 7

                                    The Detroit Redwings vs The San Jose Sharks

The Detroit Redwings made moving on the second round look so easy I nearly forgot they were involved because their series ended so long ago. The Wings made and easy exit of the Phoenix Coyotes in a four game sweep even without the services of Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg will likely be back for the next series as he has had plenty of time to rest up. The Coyotes were looking to get revenge after being embarrassed on home ice in game 7 of last year. They were unable to win a game in the series and for many moments looked like they didn't belong there in the first place. The Wings have too much experience and were just too much to deal with. Jimmy Howard out played Ilya Bryzgalov and that was the ultimate difference in the early defeat. Shane Doan was again the only Coyote that really stood up to the mighty Wings who are now looking at revenge on San Jose for their playoff exit last season.

The San Jose Sharks last season were able to make it all the way to the West Finals where they were swept by the eventual champions. This was still considered a slight success as the Sharks were being known as playoff busts after years past. They were handed division opponent Los Angeles in the first round this year and should have been able to handle them easy given the Kings loss of Anze Kopitar just before the playoffs began. Instead the Kings fought hard and lost a few close games in overtime and benefited greatly from the goal tending of Jonathan Quick. The Sharks finally got that big goal from Captain Joe Thornton as he was able to score the game winner in the series clinching game. This was a huge lift of the big man's shoulders as he has been given the blame many times in years past when his team has been unable to advance. Other Sharks stepped up as well in this series as they had too even coming back in game 3 when down 4-0 to win 6-5 in overtime. Comebacks like that can do a lot for a team's confidence when they know they are never really out of a game. Will the confidence carry on against a healthy Detroit team?

The Redwings are incredible deep and have steady goal tending. This team has been there and done that and will look to again make quick work of their opponent. The Sharks have many more offensive weapons than the Phoenix Coyotes did and will definitely pose more of a problem. Last year San Jose took advantage of a Detroit team that was forced to 7 games by the same Phoenix Coyotes. They were able to take care of the Wings in only 5 games but that will not happen this year. The Sharks will have to jump on the Wings early and hope Antti Niemi is able to play better than he did in the LA series as he was pulled twice. A tandem will not set the Sharks up for success as they can not allow the Redwings to get big leads.

X Factor
The X factor in this series will be the play of Joe Thornton. Jumbo Joe is the striving force behind this Sharks team as he was given the captaincy over Patrick Marleau, who was arguably the best player for the Sharks last year during their playoff run. Thornton will have to be a physical presence along with produce on the score sheet. If he can make a significant impact the Sharks have a chance to do just what they did last year.

The Redwings are healthy and rolling along and that spells bad news for the Sharks. The Wings only issues proves to be nothing behind goalie Jimmy Howard, so given he stays healthy the Wings should be just fine.

Redwings in 6

1st Round Playoff Breakdown (Eastern Conference)

The Eastern Conference saw a lot of bad teams for the first half of the year struggle and still have a chance at the playoffs towards the late stages. Teams like Toronto and Carolina were ultimately denied while the New Jersey Devils who were a two seed last season looked to finish as the league's worst team. This was followed up by a second half resurgence led by Ilya Kovalchuk who was scoring game winners left and right. They were with out star forward Zach Parise for most of the season and they too fell short. The Washington Capitals finished in the top spot. That fact seemed unfathomable mid-way through the year as their struggles were highly publicized in the HBO series 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic. Good play down the stretch along with poor play out in Philadelphia led to Washington walking away the east regular season crown.

The Eastern Conference

Mid-way through the season the Washington Capitals did not look like the team that dominated the year before. To think that they would surge back to the top with Alex Ovechkin leading the team in scoring but only having 32 goals didn't seem likely. Alex Ovechkin has changed his game slightly and the Caps have made other recent upgrades in Jason Arnott, Dennis Wideman and from late last year Scott Hannan. These players all come from playoff experience and will be key for this Caps team. The team overall had a very low scoring affair given their totals last year. However this team looks more primed to go deep into the playoffs then teams of years past as they were still able to win the east. With Mike Green looking to comeback the Capitals have a squad looking fit but goaltending could be an issue. They have rotated Michal Neuvirth, Semyon Varlamov and Braden Holtby through-out the year and Varlamov would be the only one with playoff experience. The issue there is recently Varalamov has gone down to injury and it will be up to the other two to help this motivated Caps team to move on. Holtby will get the start for game one.

The New York Rangers were not in control of their own destiny in the last days of the regular season but they still find themselves in. A recently injury to Ryan Callahan makes this series much less interesting than it could have been. The story line remains from two seasons ago when the two met in the first round. Washington overcame a 3-1 series lead to defeat the Rangers in 7 games and then lost to Pittsburgh in another thrilling 7 games. The Rangers welcomed back captain Chris Drury to the lineup and still has its best asset in Henril Lundqvist. Brandon Dubinsky and Marian Gaborik will play a roll but the Rangers limped in for a reason.

The Capitals are looking new and improved and will not need goaltending in this first round to get by this Rangers team. Lundqvist can still steal a game or two.

Capitals in 6

The Philadelphia Flyers have dropped the ball lately but spent most of the season safely at the top of the Eastern Conference. They are arguably one of the most deep teams in the league. Claude Giroux has stepped up and really shown his offensive capabilities this year with Jeff Carter again leading the team in goals. Danny Briere looked like he was headed for 40 goals this season but cooled off late. Chris Pronger was limited to only 50 games this season but is skating again and expected to still snatch up big minutes to help out rookie goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Which brings me to Philadelphia's favorite topic, goaltending. The tandem of Bobrovsky and veteran Brian Boucher has proven effective but looked weak towards the end. Michael Leighton has been brought back after only playing one game in the regular season, to be "assurance" for the possibility of one of the two others to go down with injury, which seems to be the right idea if you look how last year turned out.

The Buffalo Sabers were among teams that were fighting for a final playoff spot at season's end but looked better than most. Buffalo lost Derek Roy early in the season and has leaned on a lot of players, mainly Tomas Vanek, to carry to the load. Former Hobey Baker Award winner Nathan Gerbe has been a surprising bright spot as of late for the Sabers as they held on to the 7 spot in the east. Ryan Miller is arguably the team's best player and will have to be if the Sabers can shut down the Flyers offense. The defense of the Sabers is not up to par if they are looking to make a long run. The offense is spread out and could find success against the young Bobrovsky. This team has been playing playoff style hockey lately as they had to fight to get in the post season.

The Flyers came within 2 games of winning the Stanley Cup last season and has gained offensive depth with Kris Versteeg and Nikolay Zherdev. Ryan Miller is one of the league's best goalies but will likely face too many shots to steal this series.

Flyers in 6

The Boston Bruins come into this season hoping to put last years collapse behind them. Tim Thomas is looking at another Vezina for best goaltender and the defense is lead by captain Zdeno Chara and Tomas Kaberle. They have many skilled forwards and the emergence of Nathan Horton gives them an added threat they didn't have last year. The Bruins meeting the Canadians is such a fitting series as it is one of the NHL's oldest rivalries. The heat intensified when Zdeno Chara threw Max Pacioretty into the glass that separates the benches leaving him with a severe concussion. Both these teams have a lot of pride and much is at stake when its playoff time. The Bruins have to put last year behind them and if they can, they will stick around for a while.

The Montreal Canadians are one of the NHL's most storied franchises and with that always comes great expectations. Last year finished in the conference finals after two incredible upsets in the first two rounds starting with the Washington Capitals and then Pittsburgh Penguins. This team lead by American Brian Gionta will have to have players like Scott Gomez and Tomas Plekanec really step up if they are going anywhere near the conference finals again. Mike Cammalleri will surely be a factor as he was last year but much of the weight falls on the shoulders of goalie Carey Price. Price sat behind Jaroslav Halak as the Canadians made their run but now finds himself the sole option. Price had a great regular season given the pressure he was under to preform but that pressure only intensifies now. Spacek and Markov are big holes in the Canadian defense which will only complicate things for Price.

The Bruins will gain from the injuries to the Canadians blueline. The Canadians will still make this potentially one of the more entertaining series in the first round.

Bruins in 7

The Pittsburgh Penguins must receive a lot of credit for falling into a four seed with the losses of the two of the leagues best players in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Malkin is done for the year while Crosby is finally skating with teammates again after a concussion received back on January 5th when he was hit by Tampa Bay defensman Victor Hedman. Crosby still managed to lead the team in scoring while playing in half as many games. James Neil and Alexi Kovalev were added to fill in and them along with Jordan Staal and the work of Marc-Andre Fleury between the pipes will have to be big. The Penguins tied the Flyers in points but lost out on the division crown. They have a confident team that is hopeful their star in Crosby will return sometime soon. His return is up in the air at this point in time.

The Tampa Bay Lighting could have fought for the lead in the east if Steven Stamkos hadn't cooled off so much. Early on it looked as though Stamkos could go for 50 goals in 50 games until he only had 24 in the final 60+ games of the year. The Bolts have Martin St.Louis, Vincent Lecavalier and Simon Gagne, all of which who have valuable playoff experience. Tampa added goalie Dwayne Roloson, who is getting older but can still be effective for this team. The defense is steady but will have to be above average even with Pittsburgh being without Crosby and Malkin. Simon Gagne played a big role in Philadelphia's run last year and could potentially be a big signing for the Lightning. If the Lightning are going to win it is all up to Steven Stamkos. If Stamkos is able to play like he did in the beginning of the season and not the end, the Lightning will win.

If Stamkos explodes and Gagne produces the Lightning could take down the Penguins with relative ease but the fact that Pittsburgh has done so well with out their two best players can not be over looked.

1st Round Playoff Breakdown (Western Conference)

Okay, to start I have knowingly abandoned what I wanted to be a responsibility for myself to write this blog. I will set that aside just in time for the NHL playoffs. This year, just as any other, looks to be exciting right from the start. The Western Conference saw Vancouver take number one with out any issues while the rest fought till the last day of the year to get in. Four Pacific Division teams found their way in to the post-season (San Jose, Anaheim, Phoenix, Los Angeles), with Dallas being beat out of the final spot by Chicago even though both teams lost. The Eastern Conference saw a lot of injuries to key players on teams with high expectations. At the end of it Washington came out on top after a very up and down season. The Capitals have a different approach this year and they are hoping to finally make a deep run in this years post season.

The Western Conference

The Vancouver Canucks took the President's Trophy with ease this season but that means little when it comes to the playoffs. The last to win the regular season trophy and win the cup was the '03 Detroit Red Wings and many recent winners of the trophy have found even the first round

troubling, just ask San Jose and Washington. This team looks different then teams of the past but in their way stands the team that took them out of the playoffs the last two seasons, the Chicago Blackhawks. The Sedins as usual have played an enormous role as Daniel will win the Art Ross for most points this season after brother Henrik did last season. Daniel is looking to follow again in his brothers footsteps as he will look to walk away with another piece of hardware Henrik took home last year, the Hart trophy for Most Valuable Player. Roberto Luongo had another great regular season but that doesn't prove he will overcome his post season failures.

The Chicago Blackhawks, last year's Stanley Cup Champions, had to scratch and claw their way in to the playoffs. The champions finds themselves in front of a familiar foe as they sit in the way of the Canucks. Chicago, due to cap issues, was forced to see many key players leave the nest most notably Dustin Byfuglien, Kris Versteeg and goalie Antti Niemi. Chicago still has a potent offense with young captain Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa. Patrick Sharp also had a monster season. Chicago saw a lot of air time on NBC and their play was inconsistent. You could see the team that won it all last year or a team that doesn't belong to be in the playoffs. They have the talent and the confidence that they can beat Vancouver again, but do they have the goaltending. Marty Turco was brought in on a one-year contract to be a quick fix and hasn't panned out. Corey Crawford has taken over and done well but can he win the playoffs?

This is finally the year that the Canucks get past the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks are tough and will make it a fight and I wouldn't be surprised if they upset but I expect this to be handled by Vancouver.

The San Jose Sharks finally got over the hump last season and made it to the conference finals where they were ultimately swept by Chicago. To their credit every game in that series was close and could have gone their way but they didn't and Chicago went on to win it all. The Sharks still have a dangerous offense with Joe Thornton now being the captain. Behind him is still Patrick Marleau, Dany Heatley, Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi and rookie Logan Coture. Coture is a Calder hopeful for the league's best rookie. Last year's cup champion goalie Antti Niemi has taken control of the starting position over Antero Niittymaki. He will not have to be great, much like when with Chicago, in order to take the Sharks deep. Defense is suspect except for cup winner Dan Boyle. 

The Los Angeles Kings came into this season with very high hopes. The experts had LA at the top of the Western Conference and they made brief appearances there early on. Recent injuries to Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams really dampend the Kings hopes of any kind of run. Williams is expected back at some point but the more important Kopitar is out indefinitely. The Kings still have a very talented defensive core and goalie. Jonathan Quick was able to win every contest that went to a shoot-out this season, to bad that now becomes irrelevant. The defense in front of him is young and will have to be on top of its game. Drew Doughty is undoubtedly talented but at times this season lacked the same tenacity and work ethic as his rookie year. Jack Johnson, Willie Mitchell and Rob Scuderi prove effective in a tough division in the Pacific but the losses up front are too huge. Ryan Smyth and Dustin Brown can only do so much. Along with them is new acquisition Dustin Penner who failed to register a point in the final 12 games of the season. The Kings also went 1 for 22 on the Power Play since losing Kopitar.

If the Kings were healthy this post season division match-up could have been interesting. San Jose has also been playing very impressive hockey down the stretch.

San Jose in 5

The Anaheim Ducks looked like they would be watching the playoffs this year for a lot of the season but Corey Perry propelled them into home ice for the first round into the four spot. The ageless Teemu Selanne put together a fantastic 80 point campaign while Perry exploded for 98 points hitting the 50 goal mark for the first time his career, in fact before this year he hadn't even surpassed 32 goals. Along with good play from Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan and Lubomir Visnovsky, Anaheim is looking dangerous at the right time. The goalie position didn't look to be a problem early on as Jonas Hiller was looking like the dominate net minder he was in the Olympics. However, he fell to severe fatigue and Anaheim was forced to look for help. They then brought in Ray Emery and Dan Ellis who have filled the void and put the Ducks in a prominent position. Ellis appears to be the most healthy at the moment and I believe will get the start. 

The Nashville Predators manage to get in playoffs consistently and prove not to be an easy out. They fight hard like they have all season but they have never in their short history passed the first round. Goalie Pekka Rinne has been the team's best player and will have to be if they have a chance to upset Anaheim. The Preds are a team that doesn't have that explosive scorer but gets it done with the team working as a whole. Nashville had only two players get 50 points this year, Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyn. This team will look to fight on for a chance at the next round but even with a sold base Anaheim appears too tough at this point in the year.

The Ducks are hot at the right time and the Predators are just not there yet. They have a solid team but just caught the wrong team at the wrong time. 

Anaheim in 6

The Detroit Red Wings are always a team you don't want to face in the playoffs. They saw similar injury problems that could have doomed them last season, resurface late this year and they will be forced to be with out Henrik Zetterberg for at least the first game of the playoffs. They are once again the oldest team in the playoffs with an average age of around 30 years. They come with a lot of experience and are a franchise that simply knows how to win. It is not even worth mentioning all the great names on the roster. They have players that know how to perform in big games and will be doing so for years to come. Jimmy Howard has had injury problems along with back-up Chris Osgood. The back-up for the playoffs to start will be Joey MacDonald. If anything happens to Howard it will be difficult for MacDonald to help Detroit. 

Last year the Phoenix Coyotes were the team destined to move on to the second round for the first time since 1987 when the team was then the Winnipeg Jets. They were then handed Detroit in the first round which ended in the Wings favor in a decisive 6-1 shellacking in game 7 on the Yotes home ice. The Coyotes were forced to go with out Shane Doan for 4 games in that series as he went down with an upper body injury. Ilya Bryzgalov has led this team all season as he would be expected to since the team had only one 20 goal scorer in captain Shane Doan. The Coyotes are a lot like the Nashville Predators in the respect that they win games through solid defense and spaced out scoring. Keith Yandle has been an incredible bright spot on the Coyotes defense as his name is among others in the race for the Norris trophy for the league's best defenseman. This team faced injury issues late but has seen those players return in time for the playoffs. The Coyotes have a group of young players that are looking to prove they belong and now is the best time for them to do so. 

The Red Wings were given all they can handle last year by this Phoenix team and will see nothing less. If Ilya Bryzgalov is able to handle the pressure of carrying this team they will be able to sneak by this incredible playoff monster in the Detroit Red Wings. Barring no significant injuries
